"EVEREST IN A DAY AND A HALF - 100,000 Stairs-of-Hope" Twitter: #stairsofhope
On the 14th & 15th December 2013, a team of athletes will be attempting to climb the equivalent height of Mt Everest 8,840m which will involve a daunting 36 hours of stair climbing.
Each of the athletes will try reach the target of 200 reps (up and down) the famous Westcliff Stairs in Johannesburg. This will involve climbing 100,000 stairs.
There is a great synergy between this challenge of climbing 100,000 stairs and the challenge that leukemia patients face when searching for their life-saving bone marrow donor match.
For most patients the odds of finding their life saving match, within their ethnic group, is 1 in 100,000.
THE GOAL:
To have each stair sponsored for R10 and raise R1 million
HOW YOU TO HELP:
The team is asking for donations of R10 per stair. The target will be to get donations for 100,000 stairs. People can sponsor as many stairs as they wish. All donations can be paid directly into The Sunflower Fund account and invoices and Section 18 (A) Tax Certificates will be issued for large donations.

WHY THE SUNFLOWER FUND:
Every year thousands of South Africans are diagnosed with leukemia and other life threatening blood disorders. For many patients unable to stay in remission with chemotherapy alone, a bone marrow stem cell transplant becomes a viable treatment option.
For most patients the odds of finding their life saving match, within their ethnic group, is 1 in 100,000.
75% of patients diagnosed are under the age of 25.
The Sunflower Fund aims to educate and recruit well-informed bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save the lives of those needing a transplant.
Heritage plays a vital role in finding a perfect match. It is therefore critical that The Sunflower Fund continue to build a national asset to give all young patients a chance at life.
Funds raised through this event will be used towards recruiting bone marrow stem cell donors who are unable to afford their tissue test costs to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry.
This is the aim: To give children and young adults diagnosed with leukemia a hope of finding their life saving donor match.
INSPIRATION FOR THE EVEREST CHALLENGE:
RAY FUNNELL
Ray Funnell, a leukemia survivor, motivational speaker and 7 Summits mountaineer, is a phenomenal individual with a passion for life and adventure that is rarely seen.
In Ray’s words...
"In 2007 I received a life-saving stem cell transplant from my brother Gary. I was one of the lucky ones to find a perfect match. I'm also very thankful to all the blood donors that kept me alive for one year while I was in hospital.
These days it feels good to be able to Pay-it-Forward and give others the same chance at Life by raising funds through the Everest Challenge - 100,000 Stairs-of-Hope. I appeal to the public to support this cause."
THE TEAM:
We have an inspired team of athletes supporting this cause by taking part in the Everest Challenge
The team will include Ray & Jay Funnell (Summit7 team), Shaun Taylor (ultra-marathon runner), Sibusiso Vilane (adventurer and mountaineer), Pamela Buckle "Little MMI" (travel and experience blogger), Lloyd Scott Hudson "MadCA" (7 Summits mountaineer) and several others. See Notes pages for more info on the Team members.
