Route Description:
Difficulty Rating: 3. Route Type: Circular
Overall, this rural and interesting route is undulating, characterised by three relatively easy climbs. As the race takes you out of town the first three kilometres from the start at Die Draai are fairly flat, even downhill. The first hill starts near the four-kilometre marker and rises gently for the next four kilometres. The running becomes easy as the route flattens out and then gently drops to the 12-kilometre marker.
The second climb starts just before 14 kilometres but should prove relatively easy. By the time you reach the main road and turn left the second pull is behind you. Now for the third and perhaps the toughest part of the route; the climb from 22 kilometres to just after the 25th marker board is the final tester.
The route adds colour and interest to your run as you proceed through the Nan Hua Buddhist Temple. This is the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and never fails to impress. The temple traces its roots back to March 1992, when the Bronkhorstspruit City Council donated six hectares of land to the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order for a Chinese Buddhist cultural and educational complex.
With the temple behind you, from the 27-kilometre mark to the welcome end at Die Draai, the route takes an easy to downhill canter. All-in-all, a very pleasant ending to a very interesting run. February’s mornings are cool but the day warms up and towards the end of the race it could become quite hot.
